All pools have a pump and filter. The pump, which is usually run by a timer, circulates water through the filter and water then returns to the pool. Solar collectors are usually roof mounted although ground racks may also be utilized. The solar collectors are connected to the pool plumbing with PVC piping. After the water has passed through the filter, a diverter valve sends the water to the solar collectors when heat is available and the thermostat is calling for heat. The automatic temperature control panel has a sensor on the roof and also one in the pool plumbing. If it is warmer on the roof than it is in the pool, the control panel will divert the pool water to the solar panels where it is heated by the sun and returned to the pool. Once the temperature setting is satisfied, it will bypass the solar panels and send the water directly to the pool.
